Don’t Be Afraid of…Weird Bathroom Colors

Check out these three bathrooms…

Beauties…aren’t they? And guess what…I own all three of them! Can you believe anyone in their right mind would purchase homes with such rainbow-colored bathrooms? It’s especially ironic that I am such a vocal proponent of white bathroom fixtures as I’ve mentioned here, here and here.

Here’s what they look like now. I tried to take the pictures from the same angle as the before shots just to give you perspective.

The first of the before/after pictures is from one of my rental houses, the last two are from my own actual house. If you read this blog regularly, you know my house was a disaster. You can see that here, here, here, herehere, here and here.

The first renovation pictured was to the studs and all in cost about $9,000. The second one was not to the studs but cost about $10,000 due to the higher end fixtures. The last one cost a bit more (probably closer to $15,000, upon discussing with my husband, the figure is somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 – call it selective memory on my part) simply because we spared no expense. We gutted the room to the studs and used space in a hallway closet to extend the room. What you don’t see in the picture is the hand cut Walker Zanger tile in the shower, the full length of solid cherry flooring or the rimless glass shower enclosure. My husband and I decided to go for it knowing we would unlikely see that money back at re-sale. We refer to that kind of spending as “cost of enjoyment”.

All this is to say, don’t let “retro” bathrooms scare you, they can become beautiful and enjoyable rooms. And also consider this…you know you are the only one who has ever used them :-)
